Phoenix Zoo

The Phoenix Zoo is located in the Papago Park area of Phoenix, Arizona, about 12 miles (19 km) east of Downtown Phoenix. It is within the Phoenix city limits, but is not within the city of Tempe. The zoo is operated by the Arizona Center for Nature Conservation, which also manages the nearby Phoenix Herpetological Society and Nature Treks programs at South Mountain Park.

The zoo has a reputation for breeding and raising rare and endangered species, and it participates in more than 25 Species Survival Plans (SSPs), coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

The zoo’s official mission statement is: “The Phoenix Zoo is committed to the advancement of knowledge and understanding of the natural world through responsible animal management, conservation, education, recreation and research”.
