Cave Buttes Recreation Area

This is one of the most beautiful spots in the entire Phoenix area. The Cave Buttes Recreation Area is not easy to visit, however. It is fenced off and guarded. It is illegal to go there without permission. But you can get there by way of a spectacular hike along Cave Creek Road, which goes through the park. The hike starts at NW corner of the intersection of Cave Creek Road and Jomax Road. The trailhead is located on the west side of the road across from the parking lot for the Cave Creek Golf Course.

There are two campgrounds in the Cave Buttes Recreation Area; one of them is open year-round whereas the other is open seasonally. There are also several picnic areas in the park where you will find tables and grills.

The cave butte formations in this park are made of limestone and date back over 300 million years. They provide an intriguing look into the ancient past.
The Cave Buttes Recreation Area was established in 1964 to protect this unique piece of Arizona terrain. The area has attracted visitors for decades because of its unique beauty and unusual rock formations.
