Dixie Peak

Dixie Peak is located in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. It’s a short hike with a very easy first 2/3 and a quite steep final 1/3. The views from the top to Camelback as well as the rest of the preserve make this a rewarding experience.

If you’re looking for a great workout, you can always go on Saturday mornings when hundreds of other hikers can be found making their way up Dixie Peak, but if you’re looking for solitude I’d suggest any other time.

To get to the Dixie Peak trailhead, drive north on Pima Road in Paradise Valley. At the intersection with East Lincoln Drive, you’ll see a large parking lot on your left. Park there. The trailhead is well marked and easy to find. The trail starts out by ascending to an old roadbed, which is very easy. Once you are at the top of this old road, you are at the base of a tall hill that you will ascend. This part of the trail is steep and rocky, but not difficult. It’s an excellent workout!

From here, it’s not too far to the top. The last stretch is almost completely vertical rock scramble, so if you’re afraid of heights don’t look down! I believe Dixie Peak is technically considered a mountain (with its own name) because it rises above Camelback Mountain (which was named after Camelback Mountain in Pennsylvania), but it’s only about 150-200 feet high. It doesn’t really feel like a mountain; more like a big rock pile. But the trail is enjoyable and the view at the top quite good!
